Description:

Lot 232. A SAFAVID TINNED-COPPER BOWL, WESTERN IRAN, LATE 16TH/EARLY 17TH CENTURY

This magnificent Safavid tinned-copper bowl exemplifies the refined metalworking tradition of late 16th- to early 17th-century Western Iran. The wide, rounded form rests on a small circular foot and is distinguished by the extraordinary precision of its engraved decoration, which covers both the interior and exterior surfaces.

The interior features a dense network of finely executed arabesques, intertwining palmettes, and floral scrolls radiating from a central medallion—demonstrating the Safavid mastery of geometric harmony and ornamental rhythm. The upper rim bears a beautifully inscribed band of calligraphy, likely a benedictory inscription or poetic verse, bordered by alternating geometric and vegetal motifs.

On the exterior, a continuous frieze of foliage and medallions accentuates the curvature of the bowl, giving it a visual balance between restraint and opulence. Traces of tinning are still visible, providing a silvery sheen that enhances the contrast between light and shadow across the engraved surface.

This work embodies the aesthetic ideals of Safavid Iran—refinement, unity, and intricate craftsmanship—hallmarks of a period renowned for its artistic flourishing.
