Description:

Lot 178. A SILVER POCKET WATCH BY GEORGE PRIOR (1750–1825), LONDON, FOR THE OTTOMAN MARKET

A fine silver verge pocket watch signed George Prior, London, created for export to the Ottoman market. The white enamel dial features both European and Ottoman Turkish numerals, with elegantly pierced gilt hands. The inner movement cover is intricately engraved with scrolling foliate and floral motifs, revealing the maker’s signature and serial number within a lavishly decorated gilt interior.

The outer case is polished silver with a simple, refined border, and the watch retains its original bow and winding mechanism. Such pieces by George Prior were highly prized in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly within Ottoman circles, where they were esteemed as both functional instruments and luxurious symbols of refinement.

This example exemplifies the fusion of English horological craftsmanship with the aesthetic sensibilities of the Ottoman elite — a harmonious blend of technical precision and cultural sophistication.
