Description:

Lot 33. A STUDY OF A RED FLOWER
Deccan, Circa 18th Century

Painted in opaque pigments on paper, the composition presents a single red blossom rising from a cluster of green leaves, flanked by two smaller flowering plants at the base. The principal bloom is rendered with tightly layered petals in saturated vermilion tones, its curved stem and pointed leaves articulated with fine brushwork. The background fades softly from pale ground to a pale blue sky band. The image is set within a thin gold border and mounted on a marbled folio of green and blue swirling pattern.

The reverse is plain, showing a sheet of untreated paper with scattered fibres and minor surface accretions, consistent with period mounting practices.

Botanical studies of this type were produced in the Deccan as independent works of art, often made for albums. They reflect the period’s interest in naturalistic observation, presenting individual plants with clarity and aesthetic refinement for courtly appreciation.
