Description:

A TEXTILE HANGING, ODISHA 20TH CENTURY ODISHA, EAST INDIA 20TH CENTURY century

Description:
Silk ikat with vibrant resist-dyed decoration. Woven in bold jewel tones of crimson, saffron, indigo, and emerald, centered with a stylized sunburst or floral medallion flanked by striking geometric borders. The textile showcases the weft ikat technique typical of regional craftsmanship, with soft feathered transitions in the dye pattern lending a dynamic visual rhythm.

A vivid and finely preserved example of Kashmiri silk weaving, this textile likely served as a ceremonial hanging or decorative furnishing. The bold central motif, enclosed by multicolored banded borders, reflects the influence of Central Asian and Indian design vocabularies converging in the Kashmir Valley during the 19th century.

Comparable examples:
A related Kashmiri silk ikat hanging was sold at Christie's, London, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 25 October 2018, Lot 121, for £3,000.
For a similar aesthetic in color and technique, see the Textile Museum (Washington, D.C.), Accession No. 1968.34.2.

Note:
Kashmir silk hangings of this type were often commissioned for auspicious occasions or used as tent panels, reflecting both decorative and symbolic significance. Their bold color fields and symmetrical patterns suggest a strong connection to the region’s textile identity and visual culture.
