Description:

A VERY LARGE POWDER BLUE AND GILT ROULEAU VASE KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722) A large Chinese powder-blue glazed rouleau vase, finely decorated in gilt with landscape scenes of boats, pavilions, distant hills and trees. The deep mottled cobalt-blue ground is characteristic of powder-blue wares, produced by blowing or spraying cobalt pigment onto the porcelain surface before glazing, creating a soft speckled texture rather than a flat painted blue. The gilt decoration would originally have appeared brighter and more legible against the rich blue ground. Over time, gilding on Kangxi powder-blue porcelains often becomes rubbed or partially lost, as seen here, leaving delicate traces of the landscape design. The scenes retain a sense of refined literati taste, with small boats and waterside architecture suggesting a poetic river landscape. The form is a classic rouleau shape: tall cylindrical body, rounded shoulder, short neck and slightly flared mouth. Rouleau vases became especially popular during the Kangxi period and were often made for display, both for the Chinese domestic market and for export. The gilt-mounted rim appears to be a later European addition, probably fitted to protect or embellish the mouth. The unglazed foot and recessed base are visible in the underside image, with a central drilled hole, suggesting later adaptation, possibly for mounting as a lamp or decorative fitting. Surface wear, rubbing to the gilt, firing specks and age-related marks are visible throughout. Height: 50 cm
