Description:

A WHITE JADE ROUNDED SQUARE SNUFF BOTTLE WITH JADEITE STOPPER,1720-1850 Of softly rounded square form, this white jade snuff bottle is carved with a short cylindrical neck, gently swelling shoulders and a smoothly polished, tactile body. The stone is of pale, creamy white tone with subtle natural variation, its understated surface allowing the quality of the material and the restrained elegance of the form to dominate. The bottle is fitted with a contrasting jadeite stopper, the fresh green tone providing a refined visual counterpoint to the quiet luminosity of the white jade body. The pairing of white jade and jadeite reflects the Qing taste for precious hardstones, where colour, polish and proportion were valued as highly as surface ornament. Dated to 1720–1850, the bottle belongs to the sophisticated world of Chinese snuff-bottle production, in which small-scale objects were transformed into highly personal works of craftsmanship. Its compact rounded-square profile would have sat comfortably in the hand, combining practical use with the status and refinement associated with jade. A restrained and elegant example, this bottle is distinguished by the purity of its form, the soft polish of the stone and the subtle contrast of its jadeite stopper. Height: 7cm
