Description:

Lot 12. A YATAGHAN
Ottoman Turkey, Late 18th/Early 19th Century

Forged with a gently curving single-edged steel blade, the surface enriched with intricate gold damascening forming scrolling vegetal arabesques and a central band of stylised script panels. The upper section retains dark grey patination from age and wear, contrasting with the lustrous gilt ornament. The hilt is carved from pale, mottled bone, shaped with a distinctive beaked pommel and slightly flared grip, secured to the tang by inlaid rivets. The transition to the blade is marked by a gilt-decorated ferrule enhancing the refined craftsmanship.

The scabbard is clad in embossed and chased silver, richly decorated with repeating foliate motifs and small repoussé cartouches enclosing emblematic devices. The upper section is bound with ribbed rings, and the tip is finished with a small knop. The surface shows light toning and minor abrasions consistent with age.

The yataghan, a traditional Ottoman sidearm, was carried both as a practical weapon and as a symbol of status. Distinguished by its forward-curving blade and decorative mounts, it served military officers and civilians alike across the Ottoman provinces, reflecting the synthesis of utility and ornate metalwork characteristic of late imperial craftsmanship.
