Abdur Rahman Chughtai, often hailed as A.R. Chughtai, was a distinguished Pakistani artist
renowned for his profound impact on the realm of art, particularly in the evolution of
modern artistic expression in South Asia. Born on February 21, 1894, in Lahore, a city then
under British colonial rule, and now part of Pakistan, Chughtai's artistic journey is marked by
remarkable achievements.Chughtai's artistic oeuvre was deeply rooted in the rich traditions
of Islamic and Persian artistry. He adeptly mastered the techniques of Mughal and Persian
miniature painting, ingeniously infusing them with contemporary aesthetics. His work is
characterized by meticulous attention to detail, a vibrant palette of colours, and a thematic
focus on subjects drawn from Islamic history, Sufism, and classical literature.Over the course
of his illustrious career, Chughtai received numerous accolades and honours, including the
prestigious President's Pride of Performance Award in Pakistan. Beyond his artistic
contributions, he played a pivotal role in advancing art education. Notably, he was
instrumental in the establishment of the Mayo School of Industrial Arts, later evolving into
the renowned National College of Arts (NCA) in Lahore.The enduring legacy of Chughtai
resides in his artworks, celebrated for their profound cultural significance and artistic
brilliance. His paintings are prominently showcased in museums and coveted by art
collectors around the globe. Chughtai is revered as a visionary artist who adeptly bridged the
