Description:

AN ARCHAISTIC PARCEL-GILT AND SILVERED-BRONZE VASE, HU, QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) An archaistic bronze hu-form vase, decorated in deliberate imitation of early ritual bronze prototypes. The rounded body rises from a short spreading foot to a waisted neck with a thick circular mouth rim, flanked by two tubular lug handles. The form recalls ancient bronze wine vessels, but the crisp decorative finish and revivalist treatment point to Qing dynasty antiquarian taste. The body is cast with broad bands of taotie-style masks and angular leiwen/geometric ground patterns, enriched with parcel-gilt and silvered details. These contrasting metal highlights pick out the eyes, central mask elements and scrolling motifs, giving the surface a more luxurious and courtly character than an excavated archaic bronze. The surface has a dark brown patina with areas of roughness, oxidation and encrustation, particularly around the shoulder and lower body. This aged finish reinforces the archaistic appearance, while the vessel’s symmetry, decorative regularity and ornamental metal inlay are consistent with Qing revival pieces inspired by Shang and Zhou bronze forms. Height: 29.5 cm; Weight: 3.8 kg
