Description:

AN EGYPTIAN GOLD TAWERET AMULET, PTOLEMAIC PERIOD, CIRCA 323–30 B.C.

Cast in solid gold, this amulet depicts the goddess Taweret in profile, standing with pronounced pregnant belly and pendulous breasts, her form modelled with rounded contours and a naturalistic stance. The head is rendered with hippopotamus features, including a broad snout and alert ears, while the body displays incised details along the mane and spine. A ribbed suspension loop is set atop the head for attachment. The surface exhibits a rich, lustrous yellow tone with scattered reddish-brown patination.

The reverse is flat and undecorated, contrasting with the high relief of the front. The amulet’s stylised modelling and compact proportions are characteristic of Ptolemaic goldwork, reflecting both protective and symbolic functions associated with fertility and childbirth.
