Description:

AN EGYPTIAN LIMESTONE RELIEF FRAGMENT WITH PROFILE MALE HEAD, OLD KINGDOM, 5TH-6TH DYNASTY, CIRCA 2494-2181 B.C.

This fragmentary limestone relief is carved in shallow, crisp relief, presenting a portion of a male head and surrounding headdress. The stone displays a pale, creamy beige tone with areas of ochre patination and ancient surface weathering. The composition is dominated by radiating, grooved fan motifs and a broad, textured vertical band, likely representing elements of an elaborate wig or ceremonial headdress. The reverse is roughly worked, with visible tool marks and a granular texture.

The relief’s broken edges and irregular silhouette attest to its antiquity, while the rhythmic linear patterns and subtle modelling exemplify the formal, idealised style of Old Kingdom Egyptian sculpture. The interplay of incised lines and smooth planes creates a dynamic visual effect, characteristic of the period’s decorative conventions.
