AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE DOUBLE-HEADED GLAZED TURQUOISE KASHAN JUG, 13TH CENTURY
Kashan, Persia, 13th century

Description:
A rare and finely potted Kashan jug of globular form with a flaring mouth and double spouts, flanked by four looped handles arching to the rim. The jug is covered in a turquoise lead glaze with areas of iridescence and silvery encrustation from burial, lending it an almost glass-like surface. Vertical fluting encircles the body, a characteristic feature of Kashan stonepaste wares. The piece exemplifies the inventive forms and vibrant glazing associated with 13th-century Kashan production during the Seljuk period.

Dimensions:
Height: 17 cm

Provenance:
With K. Fujishiro, Japan, by 1967
Acquired by Japanese trade until 2015, when purchased by the present owner

Note:
Kashan ceramics of the 13th century are celebrated for their innovation in both form and decoration. The use of turquoise glaze, a hallmark of Persian ceramics, provided both aesthetic brilliance and a practical waterproofing finish. The double-spouted form is exceedingly rare and may have been a courtly novelty or ritualistic object. Its survival in such condition with intense turquoise coloration and strong architectural presence makes it a particularly desirable collector's piece.
