Description:

AN ILLUMINATED & ILLUSTRATED SAFAVID BIFOLIO FROM A SHAHNAMEH, PERSIA, 17TH CENTURY
Safavid Persia, 17th century

Description:
Ink, gouache, and gold on paper; a richly illuminated bifolio from a Safavid manuscript of the Shahnameh, the Persian national epic by Ferdowsi. One page featuring a finely detailed miniature scene of a royal court, set against a turquoise background with attendants, courtiers, and a central enthroned figure, enclosed within a polychrome and gilt border. The reverse and accompanying folios comprise elegant Persian nastaʿliq script in black ink, arranged diagonally and within panels, highlighted by gold-painted floral cornerpieces and ruled borders in blue and gold.

Dimensions: 30 x 24 cm

This bifolio exemplifies the stylistic refinement of 17th-century Safavid painting and calligraphy, with its rich palette, courtly theme, and elegant layout. Manuscript leaves from Shahnameh copies of this period were often compiled for noble patrons or as imperial commissions.

Comparable examples:

  • A bifolio from a 17th-century Persian Shahnameh with a courtly illustration sold at Sotheby’s, London, Arts of the Islamic World, 22 October 2019, Lot 41, for £11,875.

  • A similar illustrated leaf with royal audience scene, attributed to 17th-century Isfahan, fetched £13,750 at Bonhams, London, Islamic and Indian Art, 25 October 2022, Lot 50.

  • An illuminated bifolio from a Safavid-era Shahnameh, lacking illustration but with fine calligraphy and illumination, sold for £9,375 at Christie’s, London, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 1 April 2021, Lot 29.

Note:
The Shahnameh remained one of the most beloved literary works in Persian culture, with illustrated copies often viewed as status symbols. The visual style of this leaf—featuring a vivid courtly gathering beneath a canopy—is indicative of the late Safavid aesthetic, blending traditional Persian motifs with a deepening sense of spatial organization and coloristic brilliance.
