AN ILLUMINATED QURAN, SIGNED AHMAD AL-NAYRIZI, IRAN, DATED 1106AH/DECEMBER 1694 AD, SAFAVID, PERSIA


Arabic manuscript on paper, 426 numbered folios, 12 lines per page in naskhi script in black ink and 12 interlined spaces in nasta'liq in red ink, in gilt frames and blue fillet. Very beautiful double frontispiece of the first double page, illuminated with arabesques and palmettes on a gilt and polychrome background. Titles of the surahs in red ink in polylobed cartouches on a polychrome background. The titles and the basmala are surrounded by golden clouds. Rosettes at the end of verses. Illuminated marginal medallions. Numerous marginal annotations, often diagonal. Apocryphal colophon giving the name Ahmad al-Nayziri in Isfahan, in the month of Jumada 1 1106 H/December 1694. Beautiful later papier-mâché binding with painted and lacquered decoration, adorned with a large floral composition and a border of floral scrolls, with the inscription "sadiq as lutf-i ['ali ashraf shuda]" (Sadeq, by the grace ['Ali, become the most noble]).

An original leather Safavid binding signed by its maker Sadek Az Lotef Ali Ashraf Shad, known as Agha Sadek al awal the student of Ali Ashraf who is one of the most well known artists in the end of the safavid period and th ebeginning of the Qajar period.

What makes this copy rare and importrant is that it is translated to Persian and also signed by the famous translator Mohammed Hadi Bin Mohammed Saleh Al-Mazandarani, the grand son of the famous Al-Majlisi (who is a famous calligrapher whose name is mentioned in the book Tazikarat Al Khatatin) and this translator Al-mazandarani was famous for translating Quran Nahj Al Balagha and al shifa al sijadiya.
