Description:

: AN ILLUMINATED SAFAVID MINIATURE, EARLY 16TH CENTURY, PERSIA
Persia, early 16th century

Description:
Opaque watercolor, ink, and gold on paper; a finely rendered Safavid miniature depicting two seated figures in conversation beneath a lush chenar (Oriental plane) tree, against a vibrant and naturalistic landscape. The foreground features flowering shrubs and dark rocky terrain, while the middle ground is composed of rolling ochre hills and stylized vegetation. The background is marked by a brilliant lapis-toned sky populated with delicate birds in flight.

The two male figures are elegantly dressed in richly patterned garments, one in a saffron-orange robe and the other in deep blue and gold attire with a feathered cap, likely signifying nobility or literary courtly figures. They are seated on a luxurious red and gold carpet, possibly engaged in a poetic or philosophical dialogue—a theme commonly seen in Persianate painting.

The painting is set within gold-rubbed margins on a peach-tinted paper, delicately decorated with faintly drawn flora and fauna in a technique known as siyah qalam (black pen) or gold-and-wash decoration, typical of Safavid album pages.

Dimensions: approx. 23.5 x 15 cm (folio); miniature: 16.5 x 9.5 cm

This work exemplifies the refined aesthetics of early Safavid manuscript illumination, characterized by delicate linework, a lyrical color palette, and naturalistic detailing—particularly in the botanical elements and textile patterns.

  • A Persian miniature from a Haft Awrang manuscript, Safavid, circa 1525-35, sold at Christie’s, London, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 26 April 2018, Lot 40, for £68,750.

  • A seated couple beneath a tree, attributed to Shiraz, circa 1510, sold at Bonhams, London, Islamic and Indian Art, 21 October 2014, Lot 16, for £28,750.

Note:
Miniatures such as this were often part of royal muraqqaʿ (albums) compiled for Safavid princes or intellectual elites. The romantic or philosophical exchange between the figures and the idyllic landscape setting reflect literary themes prevalent in Persian poetry, notably those of Nizami or Sa'di. The fine detailing and use of rich pigments point to a master painter, possibly working in Herat or Tabriz during the early Safavid era.
