Description:

Lot 63. AN IMPERIAL OTTOMAN SPINACH JADE DISH INLAID WITH GOLD AND RUBIES
Ottoman Turkey, 17th Century

Carved from a single piece of deep green spinach jade, this oval dish is finely worked to a shallow form with smooth, softly curving walls. The entire surface is richly decorated with delicate overlaid gold scrollwork forming symmetrical arabesques radiating from a central cartouche. Around the rim, inset rubies alternate with gold floral motifs, each gemstone mounted in high relief. The interplay of lustrous green jade, warm gilding, and vivid red gemstones produces a striking chromatic harmony characteristic of Ottoman luxury objects.

The reverse is plain and smoothly polished, displaying the natural translucency and fine grain of the stone. Subtle variations in hue and veining enhance the depth and luminosity of the material, while the gold mounts at the edge are carefully recessed, ensuring a seamless junction between metal and stone.

Jade vessels of this quality were reserved for the Ottoman court, where imported jade from Central Asia or Mughal India was fashioned into diplomatic and ceremonial objects. The use of precious metal and gemstone inlay reflects the opulence of the imperial workshops at Topkapı, where such works symbolised wealth, refinement, and sovereign prestige.
