Description:

Lot 222. AN INDIAN CAST BRASS FIGURE OF A HORSE
India, Circa 18th Century

This finely cast brass sculpture represents a standing horse with stylized, muscular proportions and minimal embellishment, characteristic of 18th-century Indian metalwork. The figure stands on a rectangular plinth base with subtly stepped edges, evoking stability and poise.

The horse’s head is turned slightly to one side, its ears pricked forward in alert attention. The bridle and harness are indicated by delicately incised lines, while traces of engraved saddlecloth detailing remain visible along the flanks. The body’s smooth contours and compact form highlight the sculptor’s ability to balance realism with abstraction — a hallmark of regional Indian votive bronzes of the period.

A warm golden-brown patina covers the surface, with light oxidation in recessed areas, consistent with age and devotional handling. Cast in the lost-wax technique, the hollow underside confirms traditional Indian methods of bronze casting.
