Description:

Lot 25. AN INDIAN MINIATURE DEPICTING SHRI NATHJI
19th Century, Rajasthan, India (Nathdwara or Kota)

Painted in opaque pigments on paper with a dominant saffron-yellow ground, this miniature presents the iconic image of Shri Nathji standing within a shrine niche, adorned with multiple garlands, jewellery, and a distinctive conical headdress. The deity’s dark blue complexion contrasts with the bright textiles and white floral garlands. Two male attendants flank the central figure, each dressed in pale garments with red borders. One offers an aarti flame, while the other holds a ceremonial morchal. The foreground shows an assembly of ritual objects including vessels, textiles, and small votive items, all rendered with fine linear detailing. The border is framed in red with inner black and yellow rules, with minor abrasions visible along the edges.

The reverse is plain, showing a smooth beige surface with light wear and small areas of discoloration around the edges.

Miniatures depicting Shri Nathji are central to the devotional pictorial tradition of Pushtimarg, serving both as objects of private veneration and as visual records of temple ritual practice. Such paintings emulate the darshan experience of the Nathdwara shrine, presenting the deity adorned for daily or festival worship.
