Description:

Lot 13. AN INDIAN SCABBARD WITH HILT
19th Century

Composed of silver and gilt metal over a wooden core, the scabbard and hilt are intricately decorated in fine openwork and shallow relief with dense scrolling foliate motifs and cartouches containing elegant naskh inscriptions. The surface exhibits a darkened patina with traces of gilding accentuating the raised ornament. The hilt terminates in a rounded pommel curving downward in the traditional Indo-Persian style, its grip and guard similarly enriched with chased arabesques and script bands.

The scabbard is mounted with applied suspension loops and collar fittings, each finely chased and bordered by narrow beaded rims. The chape is elongated and shaped with foliate finials, completing the unified decorative scheme.

Such sheathed weapons, often commissioned for ceremonial or presentation use, reflect the refined metalworking traditions of 19th-century India, where calligraphic panels and arabesque ornament were used to convey both aesthetic sophistication and devotional expression.
