Description:

 AN INDIAN SILK HANGING TEXTILE
India, 19th century

Description:
Silk with gold thread brocade; this rectangular textile features a vibrant red ground densely patterned with repeating floral and paisley motifs in shimmering gold thread, likely woven using the traditional zari technique. The reverse is plain cotton or linen lining, stitched to stabilize and protect the delicate brocade. Likely intended as a ceremonial hanging, garment panel, or canopy (chandarvo), this textile exudes opulence and fine craftsmanship typical of 19th-century North Indian silk weaving centers such as Banaras.

This decorative textile reflects the luxurious aesthetics and technical prowess of Indian silk weaving traditions. The rich color palette and repeating boteh (paisley) motifs are emblematic of the period’s refined tastes. It is in overall good condition with minor age-related wear and some faint staining to the lining.

Comparable examples:
A 19th-century Indian silk chandarvo with similar gold threadwork sold at Christie’s, London, Art of India, 21 June 2013, Lot 72, for £2,125.

A related brocade hanging with paisley motifs from Banaras, dated c. 1850, was featured in the V&A Museum's South Asian textile collection (IS.127-1953).

Note:
Such textiles were often used in festive or religious contexts, suspended during ceremonies or displayed within domestic shrines. The brilliance of the silk and gold threads not only reflected wealth but also served ritual and symbolic functions.
