Description:

Lot 258. AN INDO-PERSIAN WOODEN BOX WITH HUNTING SCENES
19th Century

Of cylindrical form with a domed lid, this finely crafted wooden box is decorated in painted and lacquered pigments of warm amber and black tones. The exterior is embellished with detailed figural and animal motifs, including mounted hunters pursuing deer and hares amid flowering scrolls. The scenes are contained within medallion-like panels bordered by floral quatrefoils and foliate tendrils. Narrow black bands encircle the joins and base, filled with alternating rosettes in red and gold, lending rhythmic contrast to the design. The lacquer surface has developed a glossy patina with minor craquelure, testifying to age and use.

The lid is centred by a dark medallion of concentric floral motifs radiating from a small aperture, highlighted with red and green petals against a stippled black ground. The interior is plain and polished, revealing the natural grain of the wood coated in a pale varnish. The underside displays concentric turning marks and remnants of red pigment from the original ground layer.

Boxes of this type were produced across northern India and Persia during the 19th century for storing small valuables, betel nut, or cosmetic pastes. Their lacquered surfaces not only protected the wood but also provided a richly decorative medium for miniature-style painting adapted to functional domestic objects.
