Description:

AN IZNIK POTTERY DISH, OTTOMAN TURKEY, 17TH CENTURY
Iznik, Ottoman Turkey, 17th century

Description:
Of shallow form with sloping rim, this polychrome-painted dish is decorated under a clear glaze with a classic bouquet of stylised carnations, tulips, hyacinths and saz leaves emanating from a central tuft, all in vibrant tones of cobalt blue, sage green, and bole red on a white ground. The composition is framed by a border of alternating spirals and cloud bands, a common decorative motif in late Iznik wares. The reverse is plain with some kiln grit around the footring, as typical for the period.

Dimensions: Diameter: 28 cm

This fine dish exemplifies the continued evolution of Iznik ceramic art into the 17th century, maintaining high craftsmanship while incorporating more relaxed floral compositions compared to the stricter symmetry of earlier production.

Comparable examples:

  • A similar Iznik pottery dish with tulips and saz leaves, circa 1625, sold at Christie’s, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 1 April 2021, Lot 50, for £75,000

  • An Iznik dish with spiral border and floral spray, Ottoman Turkey, 17th century, sold at Sotheby’s, London, 24 October 2018, Lot 110, for £68,750

  • A large Iznik polychrome dish with central floral design, circa 1640, sold at Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 29 October 2019, Lot 63, for £55,062.

Note:
By the 17th century, Iznik potters had refined their palette and designs, favouring more fluid, painterly depictions of nature. This dish displays the distinctive Ottoman love of symmetry and botanical elegance, with the crisp bole red and soft green glazes hallmarks of the later Iznik aesthetic. Its well-preserved state and vibrant colours make it a collector’s example of late-classical Iznik production.
