Description:

AN IZNIK POTTERY DISH, OTTOMAN TURKEY, CIRCA 1590
Ottoman Turkey, circa 1590

Description:
A polychrome-painted ceramic dish, underglaze-decorated in shades of cobalt blue, turquoise, sage green, and bole red, featuring a central floral spray of tulips and carnations emanating from a stylised tuft of grass. The cavetto is encircled by a continuous vine scroll of small blossoms, all on a white ground. The reverse is plain with typical speckled glaze and a central footring pierced for suspension.

The floral palette and crisp drawing place this example firmly within the classic late 16th-century Iznik tradition, showcasing the refined stylisation and vibrant colours developed under court patronage. Minor fritting to the rim and surface wear consistent with age.

Diameter: 27.5 cm

Note:
Iznik ceramics of this period reached the height of artistic sophistication, blending Chinese-inspired forms with uniquely Ottoman motifs. Dishes like this were used both as functional wares and as diplomatic or elite gifts. The pierced footring suggests this was also valued as a display piece.
