Description:

AN IZNIK POTTERY DISH, OTTOMAN TURKEY, CIRCA 1600
Iznik, Ottoman Empire, turn of the 17th century

Description:
A large ceramic dish with a gently sloping rim and wide cavetto, painted in underglaze cobalt blue, emerald green, and bole red on a white fritware body. The central field features a boldly drawn floral composition with a spray of tulips, rosettes, and split palmettes rising from a leafy base. The design is lively and expressive, displaying the slightly looser brushwork characteristic of late Iznik production while retaining the elegance of earlier motifs.

The border is decorated with a rhythmic pattern of cloud scrolls and paired tulip buds. The reverse is adorned with stylised blue leafy tendrils radiating around the footring. The glaze is glossy, and the colour palette remains rich and well-preserved, with strong contrasts between the cobalt blue and vibrant red.

Diameter: 29cm

Provenance:
From a Single-Owner Collection (Lots 100–109)

Comparable examples:

  • A large Iznik dish with similar floral bouquet and cloud scroll border, circa 1600, sold at Sotheby’s, London, Arts of the Islamic World, 31 March 2021, Lot 112, for £78,750.

  • An Iznik dish featuring tulips and bole red saz leaves, dated to circa 1595–1605, sold at Christie’s, London, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 24 October 2019, Lot 67, for £81,250.

  • A related polychrome dish with expressive floral composition, circa 1600, sold at Bonhams, London, Islamic and Indian Art, 23 October 2018, Lot 93, for £75,000.

Note:
At the turn of the 17th century, Iznik ceramics entered a more expressive phase, with freer brushwork and greater experimentation in composition. This dish, while slightly later than the classical period, reflects the continued demand for Iznik wares at court and abroad. Its size, colour harmony, and historical context make it a valuable and visually striking example of late Ottoman ceramic artistry.
