Description:

Lot 13. AN OTTOMAN BALL-SHAPED SILVER CONTAINER
Ottoman Empire, 19th Century

This richly worked silver container is formed as a globular, hinged vessel composed of two domed halves. Its exterior is elaborately decorated in repoussé and chased relief, organised into rhythmic vertical panels resembling lobed segments. Each panel is filled with stylised foliage, palmettes, rose blossoms, and bead-like motifs, producing a dense and highly textured surface.

A particularly striking feature is the finial at the top: a fully modelled bird surrounded by radiating petals and leaves, all executed with fine engraved feathering and chased detail. This sculptural finial crowns the vessel like a blooming flower, reinforcing the container’s botanical character.

The hinge opens to reveal an interior also ornamented with corresponding repoussé floral motifs, though more softly defined due to wear and tarnish. The interior surface shows oxidation, darkening, and minor abrasions consistent with age. The underside of the vessel is similarly segmented but more heavily worn, with areas of repair and patches of replaced or reinforced metal visible.

Such containers, often produced in Ottoman workshops of the 19th century, were typically used for cosmetics, sweets, spices, or incense. Their exuberant decorative vocabulary reflects the late Ottoman taste for florid ornament and sculptural metalwork.
