Description:

AN OTTOMAN IZNIK POTTERY TILE, LATE 16TH CENTURY
Turkey, late 16th century

Description:
Fritware body, underglaze-painted in cobalt blue, turquoise, sage green, and bole red; this rectangular tile is decorated with a symmetrical floral repeat of stylised tulips and saz leaves radiating from a central rosette. The design is executed on a deep cobalt ground framed by narrow red borders. The naturalistic yet rhythmic composition is emblematic of the classical Iznik palette and floral repertoire during the peak of Ottoman ceramic production under Selim II and Murad III. The tile likely formed part of a larger architectural panel in a religious or palatial setting.

Note:
Iznik tiles of the late 16th century represent the pinnacle of Ottoman ceramic artistry, celebrated for their vibrant palette and refined decorative schemes. Floral motifs—particularly tulips and saz leaves—symbolised spiritual and worldly beauty, often adorning imperial mosques, tombs, and pavilions in Istanbul and beyond. Tiles like this were produced in state-sponsored kilns in Iznik, reflecting both technical excellence and the aesthetic ideals of the Ottoman court.
