Description:

Lot 109. AN OTTOMAN MOTHER-OF-PEARL TOBACCO PIPE
Ottoman Empire, 19th Century

This finely crafted Ottoman tobacco pipe comprises a richly ornamented shaft composed of alternating sections of mother-of-pearl and dark wood, each rectangular plaque delicately engraved and gilded with floral and foliate motifs. The contrasting textures and tones of the materials produce an elegant rhythm along the length of the pipe.

The bowl is fashioned from creamy ivory-toned material, its surface smoothly polished and fitted with gilt-metal mounts. The cover and mouthpiece are meticulously detailed, with the latter formed of translucent red material. The pipe is adorned with a suspension cord of fine silk, terminating in a pair of tassels that complement the overall luxurious aesthetic.

At the upper end, the mouthpiece section incorporates stacked elements of coral, turquoise-blue enamel, and finely worked metal fittings, reflecting the Ottoman penchant for combining precious materials in everyday objects.

Such pipes, known as çubuk, were indispensable accessories in elite Ottoman society, valued as much for their artistry as for their use. The exquisite craftsmanship and harmonious interplay of materials in this example illustrate the refined taste and opulence characteristic of 19th-century Ottoman decorative arts.
