Description:

AN OTTOMAN SILVER TANKARD WITH ASSOCIATED TUGHRA, 19TH CENTURY
Ottoman Empire, 19th century

Description:
A fine Ottoman silver tankard with elegant proportions, featuring a gently flared cylindrical body and a pronounced foot ring. The tankard is surmounted by a rounded rim with a narrow frieze of punched motifs, while the scroll handle is enhanced with rosette appliqués at both terminals. The tankard bears an engraved tughrā, likely that of Sultan Abdulhamid II, situated beneath the rim, affirming its late imperial provenance.

Crafted in solid silver and free of excessive ornamentation, this piece speaks to the refined utilitarian aesthetic of high-quality Ottoman domestic wares in the 19th century. It would have served both as a drinking vessel and a status symbol, and its considerable weight reflects the material value it would have conveyed.

Dimensions:

  • Height: 12.5cm

  • Weight: 363g

Provenance:
Private UK collection

Comparable examples:

  • A comparable 19th-century Ottoman silver tankard with tughra sold at Sotheby’s, Arts of the Islamic World, 24 October 2018, Lot 158, for £4,250.

  • A similar Ottoman silver beaker with rosette detailing sold at Christie’s, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 27 April 2017, Lot 102, for £3,750.

  • A 19th-century tughra-marked silver tankard achieved £4,000 at Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 15 October 2020, Lot 132.

Note:
Tankards bearing tughras of late Ottoman sultans are particularly collectible for their imperial associations and craftsmanship. This example’s elegant restraint is consistent with utilitarian courtly silverware of the Tanzimat period, blending refinement with practical function.
