Description:

Lot 100. AN OTTOMAN STEEL CHAMFRON, TURKEY, 16TH CENTURY

This Ottoman steel chamfron—a piece of horse armor protecting the head—dates to the 16th century and originates from Turkey. The chamfron exhibits the refined metalworking traditions of the Ottoman military workshops, combining both functionality and elegance in design.

The piece is embossed and engraved with Islamic inscriptions in graceful calligraphy within a circular medallion at the center, framed by bold fluted and ridged contours that accentuate its sculptural quality. The craftsmanship reflects the Ottoman emphasis on artistry even in martial equipment, where surface decoration often conveyed status and allegiance.

Made of solid steel, the chamfron bears a natural aged patina consistent with its age and use. Its dimensions—60 cm in length and 23 cm in width—suggest it was intended for a fully armored cavalry horse, possibly belonging to an elite Sipahi or a member of the Sultan’s guard.

Dimensions: 60 × 23 cm
Weight: 955 g
