Description:

Description:
An elegant and finely composed calligraphy panel signed by the noted 19th-century Persian calligrapher Abd o Aghal Agah Jan Pour, executed in 1282 AH (1865–66 AD). The text is rendered in black ink on delicately marbled paper, bordered by fine pink, gold, and brown rules, and laid on a cream mount. The calligraphy is likely in nasta‘liq or shikasteh script, presenting verses or aphoristic lines in praise of virtue or wisdom.

The marbled background, known as abri, showcases soft swirling hues of pink and blue, a characteristic feature in Qajar manuscript decoration. Such panels were created as standalone pieces for collectors, scholars, or as pedagogical exercises by master calligraphers.

Dimensions:

Overall (with mount): 32 x 25 cm

Calligraphic folio: 20 x 13 cm

Comparable Examples:

A signed panel by Mirza Gholam Reza Isfahani, Qajar period, sold at Bonhams, 2018, for £3,250.

A marbled calligraphic piece by Mohammad Shafi' Heravi, offered at Sotheby’s, 2017, realized £2,000.

Similar 19th-century calligraphic panels are featured in the collections of the Chester Beatty Library and the David Collection, Copenhagen.

Note:
This panel embodies the refined aesthetics of Qajar-era Persian calligraphy, balancing textual discipline with visual charm. The dated and signed nature enhances its scholarly value, particularly for those collecting Islamic manuscripts, Persian calligraphy, or Qajar art.
