Description:

Lot 2. MAFATIH AL-JINAN & MISABIH AL-JINAN IN THE SCIENCE OF HADITH
Dated 933 AH / 1527 AD

Arabic manuscript on cream paper, written in an elegant naskh script in black and red ink within double-ruled red frames. The text is laid out in two columns of fine calligraphy, with rubrications and marginal annotations in a practiced hand. The opening folio features an illuminated headpiece (ʿunwān) in gold and lapis-blue with delicate floral motifs and hanging palmette pendants, marking the manuscript’s dedication page. Occasional marginal notes and glosses accompany the main text, attesting to scholarly use and continued study over time.

The manuscript retains its original deep reddish-brown morocco binding, tooled and gilt with a central lobed medallion and cornerpieces of interlaced arabesque design, framed by a narrow fillet border. The doublures are plain, showing signs of use and age-related wear. The paper shows areas of waterstaining and minor worming, with consistent toning across the text block.

This copy, transcribed by Imam Mustafa ibn Mahmud in Constantinople in 933 AH (1527 AD), was prepared for the library of Sultan Suleiman. The work, composed by the eminent scholar Imam Yaʿqub ibn Sayyid ʿAli, is a significant treatise in the science of hadith, serving as both a methodological guide and a reference collection on the principles governing transmission, authentication, and interpretation within Islamic tradition.
