Description:

Lot 61. MAHARAJAH MAN SINGH (REG. 1804–43) VISITING THE SAGE JALLANDHARNATH
Jodhpur, circa 1830

A vivid gouache and gold on paper painting depicting Maharajah Man Singh of Jodhpur paying homage to the sage Jallandharnath. The Maharajah, seated beneath a large orange parasol and adorned in regal attire, is approached by two attendants bearing offerings. Behind them rise stylized pink foliage and a vivid blue sky — hallmarks of early 19th-century Jodhpur court painting. The scene reflects both devotional piety and royal dignity, emblematic of Man Singh’s intense spiritual devotion to the Nath Sampraday sect.

The Nath sect, tracing its origins to the 12th–13th centuries, revered the mahasiddhas — immortal ascetic yogis covered in ash and adorned with large earrings. Jallandharnath, one of their central figures, was worshipped by Man Singh as his supreme spiritual guide, an affiliation noted for its rare intensity among Hindu rulers.
