Description:

Lot 10. MAQBOOL FIDA HUSAIN (1915–2011) HORSES OF THE SUN, SIGNED BOTTOM RIGHT, OIL ON CANVAS
Mid-20th century

Painted in oil on canvas, this powerful composition features a dynamic rendering of a stylised horse against a vivid crimson ground. The figure, constructed through bold, angular brushstrokes in ochre and white, rises from a green foreground, its form delineated with thick black contours that heighten the sense of energy and tension. The sun, represented as a red orb, dominates the upper left, balancing the composition with its radiant intensity. The surface is richly textured, with layered pigment creating an expressive interplay of light and movement. The artist’s signature appears in black at the lower right corner.

The horse, one of Husain’s most enduring subjects, symbolises vitality, freedom, and the unrestrained spirit of creation. In this work, the artist transforms the animal into an emblem of solar energy and cosmic power, fusing his modernist aesthetic with deep-rooted mythological resonance drawn from Indian and Near Eastern traditions.

Measurements: 53 x 48 in (134.6 x 121.9 cm)

A luminary and co-founder of the Progressive Artists Group in 1947, Husain played a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of modern art in India. His canvases, pulsating with life, were a dynamic convergence of traditional Indian motifs, mythological themes, and contemporary societal reflections. Husain's oeuvre, marked by vivid hues and bold strokes, achieved global recognition for its compelling fusion of traditional aesthetics with modern sensibilities. However, his later years were overshadowed by controversy and political censure, leading to a self-imposed exile from his homeland. Despite the challenges, his artistic legacy endures, sparking conversations on the intricate interplay between art, culture, and societal norms in India. His paintings, resonant with symbolism and cultural narratives, continue to captivate audiences worldwide. M.F. Husain's artistic journey, from the founding of the Progressive Artists Group to the complexities of his later life, remains an integral part of Indian artistic narrative.
