Footnotes:

Nandalal Bose, born in 1882 in Munger-Khadagpur, Bihar, is lauded as a
trailblazer in modern Indian art. Although his familial roots lay in Hoogly, Bengal, his artistic
genesis took shape in Kolkata under the mentorship of Abanindranath Tagore, a prominent
figure in the Bengal School of art. Bose's early acclaim stemmed from his paintings like Jagai-
Madhai and Sati, resonating with a pan-Indian audience.A pivotal juncture in Bose's artistic
odyssey occurred during his 1909 journey to Ajanta, where he led a team to replicate the
murals under the patronage of Lady Herringham. In 1914, his encounter with Rabindranath
Tagore at Kalabhavan in Shantiniketan transformed his artistic trajectory. Influenced by
Tagore's liberal vision, Bose began depicting contemporary themes, moving away from
traditional murals.Bose's pivotal role in the revival of mural painting in modern India is
exemplified in works at Kirti Mandir in Baroda and Chinabhavan in Shantiniketan. As a
revered teacher, he nurtured talents like Benodebehari Mukherjee and Ramkinker Baij. His
linocut prints of Gandhi, symbolizing non-violent resistance, became an iconic image. In
addition to his artistic prowess, Bose designed India's first constitution and government
awards. His accolades include the title of Dexhikottom from Vishvavarati and the

Padmavibhushan. Nandalal Bose's demise in 1966 marked the end of an epoch, leaving
behind a monumental legacy in India's artistic and cultural tapestry.
