Footnotes:

Nicholas Roerich, also known as Nikolai Konstantinovich Rerikh, was a
multifaceted Russian individual, distinguished as a painter, writer, archaeologist,
theosophist, philosopher, and public figure. Influenced in his youth by Russian Symbolism, a
cultural movement emphasizing spiritual themes, Roerich delved into various intellectual
pursuits, including an avid interest in hypnosis and other spiritual practices, which is
believed to be reflected in the hypnotic expression of his paintings.Born in Saint Petersburg
to a well-to-do Baltic German father who was a notary public and a Russian mother,
Roerich's life journey took him to diverse locations across the globe until his eventual
demise in Naggar, Himachal Pradesh, India. Despite being trained as both an artist and a
lawyer, his primary passions encompassed literature, philosophy, archaeology, and, notably,
art itself.Roerich emerged as a committed advocate for the preservation of art and
architecture during times of conflict, showcasing his dedication as an activist. His
noteworthy contributions led to multiple nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. Of
particular significance is the Roerich Pact, which was enshrined into law by the United States
and the majority of nations within the Pan-American Union in April 1935. This accord
underscored the importance of safeguarding cultural treasures during armed conflicts,
highlighting Roerich's enduring impact on the global cultural landscape.
