Description:

QURAN JUZ 19, SAFAVID IRAN, 17TH CENTURY
Safavid Iran, 17th century

Description:
A richly illuminated Qur'an manuscript representing the 19th Juzʾ, produced in Safavid Iran during the 17th century. The text is elegantly penned in black naskh script in two columns per page, framed within delicate gold rulings and accentuated with rubricated verse counts and blue chapter headings. Marginal decorations feature polychrome rosettes and refined geometric medallions. The opening bifolio is distinguished by a grand illuminated sarlawh (headpiece) of interlaced floral motifs in gold and cobalt blue, adorned with red and white blossoms and fine vegetal scrollwork—a hallmark of Safavid manuscript aesthetics.

Binding:
The manuscript is housed in a contemporary Safavid lacquered binding. The cover is composed of black leather with striking red tooled medallions and cornerpieces, each outlined with delicate gilt fillets. The interior flap shows wear consistent with age, though the overall structural integrity and visual impact remain impressive.

Dimensions:
Length: 32.5 cm
Width: 22 cm

Note:
Safavid Qur’anic manuscripts from the 17th century are renowned for their refined calligraphy, illuminated elements, and symbolic use of colour and geometry. The use of gold and lapis-hued pigments—particularly in the lavish sarlawh—reflects the high-level craftsmanship typically reserved for royal or elite patrons. Manuscripts of this calibre were likely commissioned for private devotion or as courtly gifts.
