Description:

Lot 1. SAYED HAIDER RAZA (1922–2016) UNTITLED, SIGNED BOTTOM RIGHT, ACRYLIC ON CANVAS
Circa 2001

Executed in vivid acrylic pigments, this geometric abstraction is structured around an intricate network of interlocking triangles and linear bands rendered in intense tones of red, orange, ochre, and green, with deep black intervals lending rhythm and spatial tension. The surface displays smooth planar applications of colour with subtle tonal modulation, producing a rich interplay between matte and lustrous areas. The composition is enclosed within a black border, heightening its internal symmetry and equilibrium. The artist’s signature, Raza ’01, appears at the lower right corner.

The painting belongs to the mature phase of S.H. Raza’s abstraction, characterised by the dynamic articulation of geometric fields infused with chromatic energy. His work from this period synthesises formal structure with an underlying metaphysical resonance, employing the triangle and the circle as fundamental compositional and symbolic elements.

Measurements: 35 x 29 in (88.9 x 73.6 cm)

Footnote: In the context of S.H. Raza's densely textured impasto landscapes from the mid-1950s, Jacques Lassaigne, then Director of the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, observed that “throughout his persistent endeavours to delve into and rejuvenate his artistic vision, Raza has steadfastly adhered to the trajectory of exploration he initially charted for himself. The apparent disparity between his present canvases and his earlier gouaches reflects a transition from a technique where delicacy of touch reigns supreme to a more intricate and opulent approach demanding the full array of the artist's mastery… Pure forms cease to materialize in a vacuum; instead, they manifest in revelatory contrast with their surroundings, bathed in a luminosity that triumphs with double brilliance against the encroaching opacity that seeks to dim it.”
