Description:

Lot 7. Tashrih al-Ashjar (On Plants and Trees)
By Seyed Shah Abdol Aziz Bokhari, Qajar Iran, 19th Century and Later

Persian manuscript on paper, 24 x 17.5 cm, written in neat nastaʿlīq script in black ink with headings and table entries in red. Each page is organized within ruled borders, featuring botanical entries set within tabular grids and accompanied by finely painted illustrations of plants and trees. The drawings depict various species in delicate washes of green, yellow, and pink, each showing attention to botanical form—leaves, flowers, and root systems rendered in a simplified but elegant style.

The opening folio bears an illuminated headpiece in gold, blue, and pink, with fine interlace and floral arabesques, introducing the text in a decorative flourish. Each entry provides the Persian and Arabic names of the plant, its properties, and medical or practical uses, organized alphabetically by the initial letter. The author, Seyed Shah Abdol Aziz Bokhari, is named in the colophon, confirming the manuscript’s authorship and compilation in a learned context of traditional Persian pharmacology and botany.

Bound in light brown morocco, the covers decorated with blind-ruled geometric panels forming an intersecting lattice. The manuscript exemplifies the rich tradition of Persian illustrated scientific works, continuing the lineage of earlier herbal treatises from the medieval Islamic world into the Qajar period.
