Description:

TWO OTTOMAN SILVER HANGING LAMPS, TURKEY, 18TH-19TH CENTURY
Turkey, 18th–19th century

Description:
A pair of finely worked Ottoman silver hanging lamps, each suspended by long chains and adorned with richly chased decoration. The first lamp features a classic baluster form, pierced and chased with arabesque and foliate scrolls, terminating in a fluted base. The second, more elaborate example, is of domed tiered form and is fitted with chains and small bells that would jingle gently as the lamp swayed. The pierced work and floral motifs are deeply chased and worked in repoussé.

These lamps would have been suspended in religious or ceremonial spaces, casting decorative patterns of light through their openwork bodies. Their craftsmanship is demonstrative of the Ottoman appreciation for both utilitarian and aesthetic objects in religious and domestic settings.

Dimensions:
Left lamp height: 26 cm
Right lamp height: 30 cm

Provenance:
Private European collection, acquired in the mid-20th century
