TWO SOLID SILVER OTTOMAN LIDDED SAHAN, WITH ASSOCIATED TUGHRA, 19TH CENTURY, TURKEY
Ottoman Empire, 19th century

Description:
A finely crafted pair of solid silver Ottoman sahan (serving dishes) with domed lids, each surmounted by a finial in the form of a budding flower. The dishes exhibit elegant repoussé and chased decoration along the rims and bases of the lids, reflecting refined Ottoman taste during the Tanzimat period. The interior features a mirror-like finish, while the exterior displays subtle hammering indicative of handcrafted silverwork. Each is stamped with an associated tughra, likely referencing Sultan Abdulmejid I (r. 1839–1861) or Abdulaziz (r. 1861–1876).

Note:
Ottoman silver dishes such as these were used for formal service in both imperial and wealthy merchant households. Their domed forms kept food warm and protected, while the floral finials and engraved tughra affirm their ceremonial status. The substantial weight and craftsmanship signal the luxury nature of the pieces, likely intended for display as well as function.
