Footnotes: Born in Kapadvanj, Gujarat, in 1925, Tyeb Mehta once remarked, "In art, you
have to go on for a long time before you can say 'I have done something.'" Initially a film
editor, Mehta’s passion for painting led him to the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai, where he
graduated in 1952. His early exposure to European modernism, especially the distorted
forms of Francis Bacon, significantly influenced his work. Mehta’s art was deeply
introspective, evolving from attempts to understand the world in his youth to a more
profound exploration of self in his later years.
Mehta’s artistic journey saw him embrace Indian themes, particularly Hindu mythology, in
the 1970s and 80s. His exploration of mythological figures such as Durga, Kali, and
Mahishasura reflects his deep engagement with India’s cultural and spiritual traditions.
Known for his unique approach, Mehta combined the flat planes and diagonal compositions
of Indian miniature art with the macabre intensity of Bacon’s style, creating works that were
both visually striking and conceptually rich.
A master of form and technique, Mehta’s paintings often conveyed motion through static
images, drawing on the ancient Indian tradition of multiple images to represent movement.
His works, although turbulent, offer a sense of resolution and calm, exemplifying his belief
that violence in art can be redemptive. Mehta’s legacy endures through his numerous solo
exhibitions and accolades, including the Kalidas Samman in 1988.
