Description:

Lot 141. A BRASS EWER, 19TH CENTURY, QAJAR, PERSIA

This brass ewer originates from 19th-century Qajar Persia and embodies the distinctive metalwork of the period, where utilitarian objects were elevated into works of art.

The ewer’s globular body rises from a short circular foot, crowned by an arched handle and an elongated spout terminating in a stylised dragon head. The dragon motif, with open jaws and incised detailing, reflects Persian mythological symbolism—representing power and protection. The hinged lid features angular faceting, complementing the rounded volume of the body.

The surface shows a warm golden patina, with subtle traces of oxidation and verdigris around the joints, attesting to its age. The balanced proportions, coupled with the sculptural integration of handle and spout, give the piece both elegance and strength.

Typical of Qajar artistry, such ewers were used for pouring water or rosewater, often in domestic and ceremonial contexts.
