Description:

Lot 217. A BRASS FIGURE OF PARVATI
Western Deccan, India, Circa 18th Century

Cast in solid brass using the lost-wax technique, the goddess Parvati is depicted seated in lalitasana upon a square pedestal base with rounded corners. She holds her characteristic attributes—a knife and a fruit—in her upper hands, while the lower right hand rests on her raised knee in abhaya gesture, and the lower left holds a round object close to the body.

Her face is finely modeled with large almond-shaped eyes, an arched brow line, and incised markings across the cheeks, typical of Deccani metalwork. The high conical headdress and heavy jewelry—including necklace, armlets, anklets, and girdle—are carefully detailed, showing traces of ritual handling and a soft brown-gold patina from centuries of devotional use.

The figure sits atop a double-tiered pedestal, engraved with linear and hatched motifs, the underside hollow-cast and showing the remnants of casting core material. The compact form, balanced proportions, and stylized physiognomy reflect the distinct Western Deccan idiom of the 18th century, where local casting traditions merged with late Vijayanagara and early Maratha influences.
