Description:

Lot 48. A BRASS QIBLA INDICATOR
Safavid, 17th Century

Cast and engraved from warm-toned brass, this compact circular qibla indicator comprises a hinged case enclosing a magnetic compass beneath a pierced and engraved overlay. The exterior lid is engraved with concentric rings of Arabic inscriptions arranged within radiating grids, the script neatly incised and darkened for clarity. Dividing lines extend from a central point, creating a geometric schema that organises the directional data around the perimeter. The surface shows smooth handling wear, light scratches, and subtle oxidation consistent with age.

The inner face reveals a shallow, undecorated brass bowl with a central pivot point. Opposite, the compass cavity is covered by a decorative brass grille of quatrefoil form, through which the magnetic needle is visible beneath a circular glass or mica window. The hinge and clasp remain intact, with minor abrasions and patination along the rim.

Qibla indicators of this type functioned as portable instruments for determining the direction of Mecca, combining magnetic orientation with inscribed geographic or astronomical reference points. Such devices were used by travellers, scholars, and officials throughout the Islamic world, reflecting the period’s sophisticated engagement with mathematical and navigational sciences.
