Description:

Lot 219. A BRONZE EQUESTRIAN FIGURE
India, 18th Century

This compact bronze sculpture depicts a mounted rider on horseback, cast in the round on an oval base with a beaded edge. The rider, wearing a conical cap and simple ornaments, is modeled with stylized features and a calm, composed expression. Both figure and horse are rendered with an emphasis on proportion and symmetry, typical of regional Indian bronzes of the period.

The horse stands four-square, its neck arched and harness indicated by incised bands. The rider sits upright, hands positioned as if holding reins, and wears a short tunic over fitted leggings. The surface shows extensive burial accretions and a deep brown patina with traces of green oxidation, suggesting long-term ritual use and age.

The underside of the base retains casting residue and earthen deposits, consistent with traditional lost-wax casting techniques used throughout South India in the 18th century. Figures of this type were often votive in nature, representing deities, saints, or local heroes in regional shrines.
