Description:

Lot 220. A BRONZE FIGURE OF A DEITY RIDING AN ELEPHANT
India, Circa 18th Century

This expressive bronze figure represents a deity seated majestically upon a richly adorned elephant, beneath a torana (arch) decorated with flame-like projections. The figure, modeled with a conical headdress and stylized features, holds attributes in both hands and faces forward with a serene expression. The elephant, rendered with exaggerated eyes and flared ears, is draped with an ornamented saddlecloth and harness details that suggest careful attention to ritual iconography.

Cast using the lost-wax method, the sculpture exhibits a dark brown patina with traces of reddish pigment and earthen encrustations throughout, attesting to age and long devotional use. The back of the composition is enclosed by a rope-twisted aureole ending in a lotus finial. The overall modeling, proportion, and decorative treatment are characteristic of 18th-century central or southern Indian bronze traditions, where votive figures of divine riders symbolized protection and authority.
