Description:

Lot 141. A CALLIGRAPHIC INSCRIBED CARVED GEM-SET JADE KASHKUL
Central Asia, 19th Century

Carved from pale celadon jade with subtle grey veining, the kashkul is of elongated almond form with a flattened base and wide circular mouth. The rim is bordered by a band of teardrop-shaped turquoise cabochons set in gold mounts, the polished surface finely incised with nasta‘liq inscriptions contained within lobed cartouches at each end and a continuous band of calligraphy along the sides. The stone has been highly polished, revealing its smooth translucency and natural cloudy inclusions. A silver chain is attached to the rim, forming a suspension for carrying.

The underside is left plain, save for a softly recessed oval centre surrounded by a lightly engraved calligraphic border.

Kashkuls, or dervish bowls, were carried by Sufi mendicants as emblems of humility and receptacles for offerings. In jade examples such as this, enriched with gem inlay and refined calligraphy, the vessel also served a symbolic role of spiritual receptivity, uniting sacred inscription, precious material, and elegant craftsmanship characteristic of Central Asian Islamic art of the 19th century.
