Description:

Lot 140. A GOLD AND SILVER INLAID GEM-SET JADE KASHKUL
Central Asia, 19th Century

Finely carved from pale green jade of even translucency, this elongated oval beggar’s bowl (kashkul) is decorated in low relief with repeating medallions enclosing elegant nasta‘liq inscriptions. The incised calligraphy is inlaid with gold and silver, forming a continuous band around the body, while the rim is mounted with a border of small turquoise cabochons. A silver suspension chain, attached at either side of the mouth, complements the vessel’s restrained yet opulent design. The surface is softly polished, the stone showing delicate variations of tone from celadon to pale grey with light mottling.

The underside is smoothly finished and enclosed by an engraved border of further calligraphy, the central section left plain to highlight the lustre of the stone.

Kashkuls, or dervish bowls, were used by wandering Sufi mystics as symbolic vessels for collecting alms and spiritual blessings. In jade examples such as this, the form transcends its humble function, embodying the devotional craftsmanship and refined luxury associated with Central Asian metal- and hardstone work of the 19th century.
