Description:

A CHINESE BLUE & WHITE EWER FOR THE ISLAMIC MARKET, KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722) The ewer is finely potted with a hexagonal mouth and tall neck rising from a pear-shaped body, supported on a conforming spreading foot. It is set with a tall arched handle and a slender curved spout, both decorated with small floral motifs. The body is painted in underglaze blue with dense flowering branches, leafy sprays and large floral reserves, the decoration continuing around the neck, foot, handle and spout. The form reflects Chinese porcelain made for export to Islamic markets, where ewers were especially valued for use in ritual washing and pouring. The elongated spout, high handle and faceted mouth relate to metalwork prototypes popular across the Islamic world, while the painted blue-and-white floral decoration is characteristic of Kangxi-period porcelain. The crisp potting, lively cobalt painting and fusion of Chinese floral ornament with an Islamic-inspired shape make this a strong example of late 17th- to early 18th-century export porcelain. The underside is glazed within a hexagonal foot, with light surface wear, minor firing specks and age-related staining visible around the foot rim and interior. Height: 31 cm
