Description:

A LARGE CHINESE FAMILLE ROSE "PEACH TREE" BOTTLE VASE, QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) The large bottle vase has a globular body rising to a tall cylindrical neck, supported on a short foot. The pale celadon-toned ground is finely enamelled in famille rose with a blossoming peach tree, the gnarled brown trunk issuing branches laden with pink flowers and buds. Further flowering branches extend around the shoulder and neck. Peach blossom and fruit are strongly auspicious motifs in Chinese decorative art, associated with spring, renewal, longevity and immortality. On porcelain, peach-tree decoration was especially favoured for works intended to convey wishes for long life and prosperity. The restrained pale ground gives emphasis to the vivid pink blossoms and the sinuous movement of the branches, while the poem and seals on the reverse add a literati-inspired character, linking the vase to the tradition of painting and calligraphy. The reverse is inscribed in black enamel with a poetic calligraphic inscription and iron-red seals. The underside shows a recessed glazed base with an unglazed foot ring. The surface shows light age-related wear, minor firing imperfections and small areas of staining or residue around the foot. Height: 42 cm
